The best players in the NFL all share one trait—confidence. You can’t be timid or scared. It is hard to be the best if you don’t believe you are.
Just ask Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Mathews.
His talent has not come under question, but after a flying late hit out of bounds on San Francisco 49ers quarterback he’s been called dirty. When talking to the press Monday he tried to steer away from the incident, but the press just wouldn’t let it go.
Mathews even tried to make it pretty clear what he wanted to talk about by yelling “Next game!” He followed that outburst up with:
“I’m an awesome player. I’m not a dirty player.”
He’s got a pretty good argument. During his career he has only been fined twice, once for the color of shoes and for a face mask on Jay Cutler; both cost him $5000.
However, all it takes is one incident to change how a player is perceived.
