Don’t Call Jermichael Finley a Tight End
Written by Travis Pulver, Monday February 20 2012
If he has it his way, the Green Bay Packers will not be listing him a tight end—at least as far as his contract is concerned.
The Packers are rumored to be thinking about placing the franchise tag on Finley. As a tight end-- like he’s listed-- that would mean a salary of about $5.4 million. Were he listed as a wide receiver he would make about $4 million more.
In his fourth year in the league Finley blossomed into a clutch target for Packers quarterback Aaron Rogers catching 55 balls for 767 yards and eight touchdowns; in his previous three seasons he had only scored seven.
His argument, if there is one to be made, is that like many tight ends in the league these day he does not just line up on the line in a three point stance (like a traditional tight end would). Instead he has split out, been in a two point stance, and lined up in the backfield as well as on the line.
The key will be whether he has lined up the majority of the time like a traditional tight end or in other spots. Should it be the other spots this could get interesting.
