Lions Avril Might Hold Out if Franchised
Detroit Lions defensive end Cliff Avril said on Saturday that if he is given the team’s franchise tag that he might pursue holding out as one of his options.
Franchise tags will be able to be applied to players starting on Monday up until the March 5 deadline.
Avril has not been shy about telling people that he does not want to be franchised and wants a long term deal for security and longevity.
He also said that even though he wants to stay with the Lions, he will not be giving them a “hometown discount” in order to stay in Detroit.
Avril led the Lions in sacks last season with 11 and is looking for a long-term deal worth around $12 million a year. If franchised he would make around $10 million this season, if he doesn’t hold out that is.
