Peyton Manning's Arm Strength Not Back Yet
Written by Bob Whalon, Wednesday February 08 2012
While Peyton Manning has been cleared by his doctors to play football, that doesn't mean that he will be able to play football the way we have been accustomed to seeing him play football.
Manning's own doctors said that his neck had recovered enough for him to play football after three neck surgeries in the last 19 months. But the real question is whether the nerves in his arm will regenerate enough to allow him to play football at the three-time NFL MVP level that he did before he missed the entire 2011 season.
According to Indianapolis Star columnists Bob Kravitz, the answer to that question is no. At least not yet.
"I know some of the people that have seen him throw, Kravitz said Tuesday on the Tony Kornheiser Show on 980 ESPN Radio. "They say he's not throwing like an NFL quarterback yet. That doesn't mean he never will. This thing is going to take time. Structurally, he's sound. Structurally, he can take a hit." Kravitz also used the term "noodle arm" to describe Manning's throwing.
That throwing has been taking place on the Duke University campus according to the Duke Hoop Blog. He is working out there with long-time family friend and adviser David Cutcliffe, the head coach of the Blue Devils football team.
Manning's secret Duke workouts were disclosed by Blue Devils offensive lineman Matt Skura, who tweeted that he "got to stretch next to Peyton Manning."
Manning working out at Duke instead of the Colts facilities seems to indicate an impending divorce between the quarterback and the only NFL Team he has ever known. Manning will become a free agent if the Colts don't pay him a $28 million roster bonus in mid-March. The odds of Colts owner Jim Irsay paying that bonus go down by the day.
Of course, this is only February and a lot can change in a month. Whether or not the Colts have enough time to know whether they will get the Peyton Manning of old or a "Noodle arm" Manning is hard to tell.
Assuming the Colts don't pay the bonus, there are sure to be several suitors willing to bid for the sure-fire Hall of Famers services for the 2012 season. Now though, Manning may have to prove that he has the same arm strength he had before the surgeries.
It is sure to be the biggest story of the 2012 NFL season.
