The Best Team Did Not Win
Written by Christopher Corazon, Monday February 06 2012
This may seem like sour grapes, but it’s not. The best team did not win Super Bowl XLVI. And this has nothing to do with being a fan of the Patriots because the Patriots were not the best team either. I’m not even sure if the Giants or Patriots were in the top 5 of the NFL this year.
The best team this season was clearly the Packers. The Saints were close behind. The Ravens were better than either team in the Super Bowl. The Steelers and Texans were better before injuries reduced both teams to shells of what they were. Heck, even the 49ers were…. Ok, even I can’t believe that one.
Still, there are five teams that were better than the teams that were in the Super Bowl. So what does that prove? The Super Bowl is not about the best in the NFL, it is about the hottest team. But even that can be deceiving. The Patriots won 10 games in a row, but many of those wins came against teams that finished below .500. Their path in the playoffs included a win over Tebow-mania and a missed field goal in the closing seconds against a Baltimore team that was weaker on the road. The wins the Pats had over the sub-.500 teams gave New England that home field advantage.
Michael Holley is a radio personality on WEEI and has written books on the Patriots. He has forgotten more about the Patriots than I will ever know. Last week, he was on radio row and spoke on “The Fan” in Washington DC. He said that if the Patriots won, they would be the weakest team of the four Super Bowl winners of the Pats.
And how about those Giants? At one point late in the season, they were .500 at 7-7. They are the first team in the NFL to finish the regular season 9-7 and win the Super Bowl. Giant fans, proving to be the most fickle among major sports fans, wanted Tom Coughlin fired. Now they will compare him to their other god, Bill Parcells.
And what about football fans? This is what we’re left with: a Super Bowl winner that is really the last team standing, not the best team. What happened to “may the best team win”? Sadly, it fell by the wayside with so many other myths we once believed like “liberty and justice for all”.
