Cubs and Garza Avoid Arbitration with One-Year Deal

The Chicago Cubs and right-handed pitcher Matt Garza avoided arbitration in agreeing to a $9.5 million one-year contract just minutes before the scheduled start of their salary arbitration hearing in St. Petersburg, Florida on Friday.
Garza was looking for a $12.5 million deal while the Cubs were offering $7.95 million.
There is also performance bonuses worth an additional $150,000 which will be based on innings pitched. Garza will receive $50,000 for 210 innings pitched and an additional $100,000 for 220 innings pitched.
In his first season with the Cubs, Garza went 10-10 with a 3.32 ERA and had a team-high 197 strikeouts in 198 innings.
