More Than Just Football
Written by Christopher Corazon, Friday February 03 2012
On Sunday, there will be a really big football game. But really, the entire event has become more than just football.
Some people watch the Super Bowl just for the commercials. The ad men know this, and that's why this year the most expensive ad sold for $4 million. Some may tune in for the halftime show. In the past, these shows have included memorable moments like Janet Jackson's "Wardrobe Malfunction". Comedian Lewis Black commented it was a mistake to have MTV be in charge of the show, because it would be silly to have MTV be included with anything that involved music. This year the performer will be Madonna.
There's plenty of hype leading up to the day as well. There's "radio row", where radio shows broadcast and get a large variety of guests. While many of them talk about football, some are there for other reasons. On Friday, Adam Sandler was promoting his latest movie. Curt Schilling was making a pitch for his latest video game.
Schilling also told some funny stories from his days in Baltimore. He mentioned how Cal Ripken Jr. was known for calling pitches. In one game in Minnesota, Schilling was facing Kirby Puckett with runners in scoring position. Schilling wanted to throw the splitter, but the catcher kept calling a different pitch. The ump called time, and Ripken ran in from short and explained why he should not throw the split, and instead throw a high fastball. Schilling did, it worked, and the Orioles got out of the inning. Schilling also told an amusing story about how he learned he was traded out of Baltimore. He got a call from the GM about a trade with Houston. He thought the organization was just very open with information. Later, he realized that he was part of the trade.
