No Beer at the Super Bowl?
Written by Bob Whalon, Wednesday February 01 2012
If you are planning to go to the Super Bowl at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis between the New England Patriots and New York Giants, you better make a beer run before you cross the border into the state of Indiana. You see, Indiana is among a handful of states that ban carry-out liquor on Sundays, even on Super Bowl Sunday.
How could a state possibly host a Super Bowl and not allow any store in the state to sell any liquor for take-out on the day of the big game? Well, it's because of a little thing called a "blue law".
"Blue laws" are mostly only in Southern and Midwest states and limit liquor sales on Sundays. The name comes from an early set of rules in New Haven, Conn., that were written on blue paper.
This law restricts liquor and convenience stores from selling carry-out booze after 3 am Sunday until 7 am Monday.
Indiana restaurants and taverns can get permits to serve alcohol for on-premises drinking from 7 am until the next day all week long, including Sundays. There is also no law that forbids drinking alcohol on the streets; so many restaurants are planning to expand their outside eating areas to include parking lots for the Super Bowl. At least that's better than no tailgates at all.
So why wouldn't the state of Indiana just waive such a ridiculous law, so that the local economy could reap every possible financial benefit from hosting the Super Bowl? Nobody knows.
Jane Jankowski, a spokeswoman for Gov. Mitch Daniels (No relation to Jack), said that the issue was never raised. Obviously Ms. Jankowski isn't much of a football fan.
Fear not though, beer and football fans. Far away from Indy, one community is making a change.
Apparently the leaders of a little town in Alaska called Dillingham, with all of 2,400 residents, is lifting its ban on alcohol sales at its restaurant and bars for all Super Bowl Sundays going forward, although the liquor stores will remain closed. The town lifted the ban for last year's Super Bowl and there were no incidents, so they have decided to make the change permanent.
It's just a shame that the leaders in Indiana aren't as smart as those in Dillingham, Alaska.
