Peyton Manning Not Planning to Retire
Written by Bob Whalon, Tuesday January 31 2012
In spite of all the rumors, Peyton Manning insists he has no plans to retire any time soon. "I have no plans on doing that," Manning said when asked if he was going to retire on Tuesday.
"My plan hasn't changed," Manning said. "I'm on track with what the doctors have told me to do, and I'm doing that. I'm rehabbing hard."
While the focus in Indianapolis is supposed to be on the New England Patriots and New York Giants as they get ready to compete in the Super Bowl at Lucas Oil Stadium, it's Peyton Manning who is garnering most of the attention these days. "It's not the way it should be," Manning said.
Peyton's little brother Eli has a chance to step out of his older brother's shadow by winning his second Super Bowl with the Giants, but even that storyline is taking a backseat to the drama unfolding with the Colts' four-time league MVP.
Peyton has had three surgeries on his neck in the last 19 months. The most recent procedure fused two vertebrae together, a procedure that forced him to miss the Colts' 2-14 season.
Because of that record, the Colts now hold the No. 1 selection in the upcoming NFL draft and the consensus No. 1 pick is Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck. But before the draft, the Colts have to make a decision on Peyton's future with the team.
Manning is due a $28 million roster bonus in early March. If the team does not pay that bonus, Manning will become a free agent.
Since the Super Bowl is being played in Indianapolis, Colts owner Jim Irsay joined the city's mayor, the Indiana governor and host committee officials at Monday's new conference to discuss the game week. Of course, most of the questions focused on Manning's future.
For their part, the Manning brothers took turns praising the other.
"Peyton has had an unbelievable career. I haven't seen anybody play at a higher level than he has," Eli said. "It's always been my goal to get to his level of football, to get to his level of play. I'm just amazed on some of the throws and plays he's made in his career."
"I'll be rooting hard for the Giants," Peyton said. "I've always wanted nothing but the best for Eli and I hope he breaks all of my records."
Of course, Peyton doesn't seem ready to stop setting more records himself just yet.
