Eagles Hire Bowles as Secondary Coach
Written by Bob Whalon, Monday January 30 2012
The Philadelphia Eagles just finished the most disappointing season in the history of the franchise and all they are changing is their defensive backs coach. The Eagles announced on Monday that Todd Bowles will be the new secondary coach.
Bowles will replace the only member of the Eagles franchise to lose his job after a season that started with proclamations of "Dream Teams" and Super Bowls ended with a thud and an 8-8 record. Johnnie Lynn was fired after the season and apparently the Eagles franchise wants everyone to think the team's failures were all his fault.
Head Coach Andy Reid will hold a press conference at noon on Tuesday to announcing the hiring of Bowles. It will be the first time Reid has spoken since the season ended on New Years Day, when he arrogantly told the media that he would "start thinking about the offseason when he wants to start thinking about it."
Apparently Reid thinks everything is just fine as it is, in spite of that 8-8 record that left the team out of the playoffs.
With the hiring of Bowles, offensive line coach turned defensive coordinator Juan Castillo will remain as the team's defensive head. Castillo had never coached defense in the NFL and his inexperience certainly cost the Eagles a few games. They blew five fourth quarter leads during the 2011 season. At least Castillo won't be learning on the job for the first half of the 2012 season.
Bowles is a 12-year NFL coaching veteran who was most recently the interim head coach of the Miami Dolphins after Tony Sparano was fired with three weeks left in the 2011 season. Bowles went 2-1 and interviewed for the Dolphins top job, but the team decided to go in another direction.
Bowles started his NFL Coaching career in 2000 as the defensive backs coach with the New York Jets. He then moved on to Cleveland where he coached the Browns' secondary from 2001-04. From 2005-07, Bowles was the secondary coach for the Dallas Cowboys before coaching the Dolphins defensive backs for the last four years.
Bowles actually has a Philly connection, as he went to Temple University in Philadelphia from 1982 to 1985. He played eight seasons in the NFL as a defensive back with the Washington Redskins (1986-90, 1992-93) and San Francisco 49ers (1991).
While this is obviously a step back in the career path of a coach who recently interviewed for the head coaching job with the Oakland Raiders, there is speculation that Bowles could be more than a normal secondary coach. With Castillo being so inexperienced, Bowles will probably be expected to help "coach" the Eagles defensive coordinator, as well as the players.
