The Waiting Is The Hardest Part
Written by Christopher Corazon, Friday January 27 2012
Tom Petty once sang "The Waiting Is The Hardest Part". Fans of New England and the Giants are probably finding more than enough material to read. But on a different level, some of those same fans might admit they can't wait for the game to be here.
The NFL has decided to move the Pro Bowl into the bye week. But who can really be excited about that? On WBZ in Boston, radio host Steve LeVeille ended his week with a mock pre-Pro Bowl final hour. He told the listeners at the beginning of the hour that people tend to tune in to his overnight show as they wake up, so he wanted callers to sound excited about the Pro Bowl. Callers obliged, and people talked about Pro Bowl parties, and the Pro Bowl commercials, and all the great tradition in Hawaii. But the excitement, like the Pro Bowl, was a joke.
Next, the Super Bowl week starts up with all the hype. Media comes in for media day from around the world. You can sense that some of them do not know anything about American football when they ask questions like "If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?" Personally, I could see myself as a palm tree because I like warm climates. Or a pine, because they always stay green. My parents had a Japanese Maple, and I always liked that tree because the leaves were red all year and changed to green in the fall.
What do these trees have to do with football? Nothing. But there are only so many times you can talk about this rematch of four years ago. Only so many times you can say "You can't spell elite without E-L-I". How many times can you mention that the game will be in the home of one Manning, played by another Manning, and the opponent will be the rival Tom Brady?
Enough is enough. Enough hype. Bring on the game. I wish it was this Sunday. But it's not. So we just have to keep on waiting.
