Boston Bruins Visit Obama in White House

The Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup with a seven-game series victory over the Vancouver Canucks in the 2011 NHL Finals and now it was their chance to meet the President of the United States.

President Obama hosted the six-time champions at the White House on Monday afternoon and had a little fun with the city of Boston in the process.  As a life-long Chicago sports fan, the President thinks the city of Boston may be getting a bit greedy.

"The Bruins, the Sox, the Celtics and now the Patriots.  Enough already Boston," Obama said in reference to the many championships the city of Boston has won recently.  The Celtics won the NBA Championship in 2008, the Red Sox won the World Series in 2007 and the Patriots won the Super Bowl in 2005 and will be playing in the NFL's big game again this year.

All was not cheery in the Rose Garden though.  One Bruin decided he would rather make a political statement than meet the president with his teammates.

"This Stanley Cup was won by defense as much as by offense," Obama said.  "Tim Thomas posted two shutouts in the Stanley Cup Finals and set an all-time record for saves in the postseason and he also earned the honor of being only the second American ever to be recognized as the Stanley Cup playoff's MVP."

Unfortunately Thomas wasn't there to hear the president's kind words since he decided not to join his teammates.  He left the following message on his Twitter page.

"I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the rights, liberties and property of the people.  This is being done at the Executive, Legislative and Judicial level.  This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers' vision for the Federal government.  Because I feel this, today I have exercised my right as a free citizen and did not visit the White House.  This is not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the position we are in as a country.  This is about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.  This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic.  TT"

Thomas was a big reason the Bruins won their first title in 39 years.  He went 16-9 in the playoffs with a 1.98 goals-against average.

"Everybody has their own opinion and political beliefs and he chose not to join us," Bruins team president Cam Neely said of Thomas.  "We certainly would have liked to have him come and join us, but that's his choice.  Obviously it's not a choice that most of the guys, all the guys except for Tim.  That's his decision and his choice."
