Eli Manning Feeling Queasy
Written by Bob Whalon, Wednesday January 18 2012
Is New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning so scared about facing the San Francisco 49ers that he is literally sick to his stomach? Not exactly.
While Manning did miss part of practice on Wednesday, he should be better in time to make the flight out west to San Francisco to meet the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday. "It's a stomach bug, hopefully a 24-hour deal," New York head coach Tom Coughlin said.
"If there's one guy who can miss a practice Wednesday mentally it's No. 10," Giants guard Chris Snee said of Manning. "He was probably in there on Monday and Tuesday looking at film."
This is Manning's first appearance on the Giants' injury report all season. He missed virtually the entire practice with the ailment.
Joining Manning on the injured list Wednesday were defensive ends Justin Tuck (shoulder) and Osi Umenyiora (ankle, knee) cornerback Corey Webster (hamstring) and rookie linebacker Mark Herzlich (ankle). All practiced on a limited basis and are expected to be available on Sunday in the NFC Championship Game.
Running back Ahmad Bradshaw sat out practice entirely with a foot injury, but he has frequently missed practices in recent weeks. His availability for Sunday is unknown, but his teammates expect Bradshaw to suit up and play.
Tight end Jake Ballard said it was obvious immediately that Manning wasn't feeling well.
"You could tell he was hurting bad," Ballard said. "He usually toughs things out like that. You could tell he was dragging, and you don't like to see your Pro Bowl quarterback throwing up or feeling like that. Hopefully he's better tomorrow."
Coughlin and the training staff sent Manning home to recuperate and also to prevent him from possibly spreading whatever he has to the rest of the team. Playing the sturdy 49ers defense will be tough enough. The Giants don't also want to be fighting against their own bodies during the game.
While Manning is at home, Ballard figured his quarterback would keep himself busy watching film. Snee was a little more thoughtful.
"I'm going to bring him some soup tomorrow," Snee said. "I'll do whatever it takes to make sure he is at full strength." When asked what kind of soup Snee planned to bring his ailing quarterback he joked, "Southern gumbo. Or whatever they have in the cafeteria."
Hopefully it wasn't the cafeteria food that got him sick in the first place.
