Falcons Nab Nolan for Defense
Written by Nolan Thomas, Wednesday January 18 2012
The Atlanta Falcons hired Mike Nolan as their defensive coordinator on Wednesday.
For the past two seasons Nolan was the Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator and prior to that he was the San Francisco 49ers head coach for four years.
Nolan takes over for Brian VanGorder, who took over the defensive coordinator duties at Auburn University.
Although Nolan did not have much success as a head coach, he is highly regarded as one of the top defensive minds in the NFL.
Nolan has impressive numbers with the Dolphins defense. They allowed the sixth-fewest points in the NFL in averaging 19.6 per game, ranked third in rushing yards in averaging 95.6-YPG and tied for 10th in the league with 41 sacks.
Nolan has already stated that the Falcons defense will remain a 4-3 scheme and that he will not change it to a 3-4 scheme, which he has favored in the past and ran with the Dolphins.
Nolan has been defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, Washington Redskins, New York Jets, Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos.
