Tebow Named Broncos Starter for Next Year
Written by Bob Whalon, Monday January 16 2012
Denver chief of football operations, John Elway knows a thing or two about being the starting quarterback of the Broncos. He also knows that there were many questions as to the future of the quarterback position on the team. That's why he announced that Tim Tebow would be the starting quarterback of the Broncos next season.
"I think Tim's earned the right to be the starting quarterback going into training camp next year," Elway said at a 40-minute news conference in which 24 of the 47 questions were about Tebow. "I think he made some great strides this year. He obviously played very well against Pittsburgh and played well in a lot of other football games."
The Pittsburgh game was the wild-card round playoff win last weekend, where Tebow threw an 80-yard TD pass to Demaryius Thomas on the first play of overtime.
The reason that Elway felt the need to come out and name Tebow the starter now is that the quarterback had less than stellar statistics, in spite of his late game heroics. Tebow completed just 46.5 percent of his passes in the regular season and 40.4 percent in the playoffs. His 34 percent completion percentage against the Patriots last weekend was the lowest in a playoff game since 1998.
The upside with Tebow is in the fact that he seems to will his teams to victory. After taking over as the starting quarterback of a 1-4 team in October, he led the team to a 7-4 finish and AFC West division crown. His play and his devout religious faith has also led to him being the most recognizable athlete in the entire NFL. "People are Tebowing outside the Eiffel Tower," Elway said. It has also made him the most polarizing.
Elway said that he will work with Tebow during the offseason to help him become a better quarterback.
"I want to help Tim in every way I can, to be able to improve through what I learned," Elway said. "Hopefully I can teach him what I learned over my 16-year career. "To be able to tell him what I learned in Year 10, hopefully he gets that in year 3 or 4."
What Elway learned later in his career was how to be less of a runner and more of a pocket passer. Elway managed to end his career with back-to-back Super Bowl titles after losing the big game three previous times.
Although Tebow will going into training camp as the starter, Elway is not promising that he won't bring in another quarterback to challenge him.
"Right now we've got two quarterbacks under contract," Elway said of Tebow and practice squad QB Adam Weber. "So we've obviously got to be in the market to find some more quarterbacks. Now, I think that anybody that comes in, a free agent, no matter what position, is going to believe they're coming in and have a chance to compete. Anybody that comes in here, when we start training camp, is going to be competing for jobs. Obviously, with Tim's reputation, if the guy is afraid to come in here and compete for that job, then maybe it's not the right guy."
The one thing that may hinder Tebow's progression as a quarterback is if offensive coordinator Mike McCoy leaves for a head coaching job elsewhere. McCoy interviewed for the Miami Dolphins head coaching job and will interview for the head job with the Oakland Raiders as well.
Regardless of whether McCoy is calling the offensive plays or not, the greatest quarterback in the franchise's history thinks that the quarterback of the future for the Denver Broncos is Tim Tebow.
