Giants avoid arbitration with Vogelsong, agree on multi-year deal
According to a tweet from 95.7 FM The Game’s Mychael Urban, the San Francisco Giants have avoided arbitration with right-handed pitcher Ryan Vogelsong and have signed him to a two-year contract with a club option for a third year in 2014.
Terms of the agreement have not yet been made public, but Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports says it’s two years, $8 million dollars.
Vogey had a fantastic (and surprising) 2011 season, going 13-7 with a 2.71 ERA, 1.252 WHIP, 7.0 SO/9 rate, and 3.1 BB/9 rate. He was named to his first All-Star game in July.
The 33-year old sure looked like the real deal last season, but skeptics have wondered about 2000-2006, when he went 10-22 with a 5.86 ERA and 1.590 WHIP and never finished with an ERA better than 4.43. His career SO/9 rate is only 6.5 while his career walk rate is 3.9 BB/9 IP making last year look like an anomaly.
The Giants still have nine players eligible for arbitration: Angel Pagan, Emmanuel Burriss, Melky Cabrera, Mike Fontenot, Nate Schierholtz, Pablo Sandoval, Santiago Casilla, Sergio Romo and Tim Lincecum.
Additionally, starter Matt Cain is eligible for free agency after the 2012 season, and the Giants have stated they would like to lock him up to a long-term contract before spring training. San Jose Mercury News writer Andrew Baggarly reports there has been “healthy, ongoing dialogue” between the Giants and Cain’s camp.
Other 2013 free agents include Aubrey Huff (who has a $10 million dollar club option and a $2 million dollar buyout), Freddy Sanchez, Cabrera, Pagan, Guillermo Mota, and Jeremy Affeldt, none of whom I would expect are on the team’s radar for an extension.
