Fans' BCS Championship Game Seats Given to Press

What would you do if you showed up to the biggest college football game of the year only to find that they gave your seats away?  Unfortunately, dozens of fans had to deal with that scenario at the Allstate BCS Championship Game on Monday night.

When dozens of fans showed up at the Louisiana Superdome to watch the BCS Championship Game between No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama, they found that their seats were turned into an overflow area for the media.  Apparently someone involved with the BCS or the Superdome didn't allow for enough seating for the media and the top two rows of the upper deck were taken over and turned into an auxiliary press area.

One of those top two rows were covered with tables for the media, while the other was for press seating.

When the fans who had paid for the tickets showed up, they were told that they would not be able to use their seats.  They were told that they would be moved to the lower level of the stadium, also known as the plaza.  Seats in that level are more expensive, but are not necessarily better seats.

Timothy Rodrigue of Denham Springs was one of the fans whose seat was taken over by the press.

"The problem is, it's 30 minutes to kickoff and I don't want to go sit in the plaza if I'm not going to be able to see the game now." Rodrigue said.  "I don't want to sit 12 rows from the field.  I want to be able to see what's going on.  I'd rather be up high.  These seats are great."  Maybe that's why they gave them to the press.

This is similar to the mix-up that occurred at last year's Super Bowl in Arlington, Texas, where some temporary seating had not been inspected and couldn't be used.  Those displaced fans had to watch the game on televisions in a lounge at Cowboys Stadium.

Incidentally, next year's Super Bowl will be played at the Superdome and there certainly will be a need for some auxiliary press seating for that game as well.

"It's a great exercise in crisis management for the dome at this point," Rodrigue said sarcastically.  "At least I feel good that they're getting this out of the way before the Super Bowl Happens next year, but it's certainly an inconvenience for all these people.  People are freaking out."
