Not The National Championship
Written by Christopher Corazon, Wednesday January 04 2012
For years, Major League Baseball has had a World Series. One problem, they don't invite the world to participate. Most of the winners are teams that play in the US, for a couple of years in the early 90's they let a Canadian team win. But it's a bit of irony when any team calls themselves "World Champions".
This Monday, college football will try to determine the National Champioin. One problem, they really are not allowing other teams in the nation to participate. LSU and Alabama are in the same conference. They did not face each other in the conference championship because they play in the same division. So on Monday we will get to see the rematch.
On ESPN, Colin Cowherd says there is no problem with a rematch. He uses the Villanova championship over Georgetown in 1985 as an example. It was the third time they played thad year. One problem with Cowherd's argument, that rematch was the result of a playoff. Football does not have a playoff, and does not want one. They say it would take away from the integrity of the regular season. LSU played Alabama in the regular season in Alabama. LSU won.
That win may have an impact on some voters. David Teel of the Daily Press may vote for LSU even if they lose in a close game. Other voters in the AP may follow, and some might vote for number 3 Oklahoma State. Many of these issues would be solved with a simple play off with the top four teams. But who wants that? Then there would be nothing to complain about, and we would have a National Champion.
