NBC to Air NFL Awards Show
Written by Bob Whalon, Tuesday January 03 2012
Apparently there is nothing related to the world of sports that the networks will not broadcast.
NBC announced that the network will put on a two-hour prime-time awards show called "NFL Honors" on Super Bowl eve. The Feb. 4 broadcast will announce several Associated Press awards given to NFL players each year. In the past these awards were announced by the AP with little fanfare. Now that is all about to change.
All seven AP NFL awards will be presented in a made-for-TV extravaganza hosted by Alec Baldwin. Of course, Baldwin is a star of an NBC show, "30 Rock, so the cross promotion angle will be intact. The show will air live from 9-11 pm EST from the Murat Theater in Indianapolis.
The show will feature a live performance by Lenny Kravitz, because the NFL can't seem to do anything without a live performance by some big name from the music industry. There will also be appearances from Hall of Famers, Jerry Rice, Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders, Shannon Sharpe and Steve Young.
As if all of that isn't exciting enough, the program will be proceeded by a red carpet show on the NFL Network from 8-9 p.m. EST.
The AP awards that will be announced during the show are the MVP award, the Walter Payton Man of the Year award, which recognizes a player's community service as well as his excellence on the field, Coach of the Year, Comeback Player, Defensive Player, Defensive Rookie, Offensive Player and Offensive Rookie.
The awards are voted on by a nationwide panel of 50 media members who cover the NFL. THE AP tabulates the votes.
In a world where college athletes are timed running around in shorts and a t-shirt has actually been turned into a show, this shouldn't come as a surprise. Who would have ever thought that the NFL Draft would be one of the highest rated shows on television each year? Heck, who would have thought that LeBron James telling the world that he was taking his narcissistic act to South Beach would be a ratings hit?
The NFL has even made a television show out of the seemingly boring release of their schedule, so this only seems like the next logical step.
