Bears Fire GM Angelo, OC Martz Resigns
Written by Nolan Thomas, Tuesday January 03 2012
The Chicago Bears finally did what fans have been screaming for years and fired General Manager Jerry Angelo and offensive coordinator Mike Martz will not be back either as he resigned.
After the team totally collapsed after starting out the season 7-3 with a five game losing streak after quarterback Jay Cutler was injured, the lack of depth, especially at quarterback, really showed Angelo’s ineptness.
While Angelo pulled off a monster trade to acquire quarterback Jay Cutler in 2009, and signed free agent defensive end Julius Peppers in 2010, his drafts have continuously failed to strengthen the team.
This season was the fourth time in five seasons that the Bears have not reached the playoffs. For the 11 years under Angelo the Bears won four division titles and reached a Super Bowl.
As far as Martz was concerned, after meeting with head coach Lovie Smith, the offensive guru resigned due to "philosophical differences". Martz’ hand picked quarterbacks coach, Shane Day, is also out.
According to the Bears website, Smith will be retained as head coach for next season.
