Former NFL official Rips Jon Gruden
Written by Nolan Thomas, Thursday December 29 2011
Mike Pereira, the former head of officiating for the NFL who now works as an analyst for Fox Sports is not a big fan of former coach Jon Gruden and his commentary on Monday Night Football.
Pereira wrote in an article for FoxSports.com that Gruden was a “loudmouth as a coach” who disrespected officials and is a “blowhard in the broadcast booth who spouts off when he doesn’t know what he is talking about.”
He also went on to write that he has very little respect for Gruden when it comes to his knowledge of the rules.
Pereira references two specific plays from this past Monday during the Atlanta Falcons- New Orleans Saints game in reference to hits on defenseless receivers.
The first play in question was when Saints receiver Marques Colston was a victim of a helmet-to-helmet hit by the Falcons linebacker Curtis Lofton, which he was penalized for an illegal hit on a defenseless receiver.
Gruden argued the call saying the defender “is entitled to play in the middle of the field.”
The second play in question was on an incomplete pass to Falcons receiver Reggie Kelly, Saints defensive back Malcolm Jenkins hits him in the back with his right shoulder, a perfectly legal hit according to the rules.
Gruden then argued the non-call saying; “I don’t know what the difference is than the one on Lofton. If Lofton’s penalty was 15 yards, then that’s 15 yards. I just don’t understand how games are being officiated.”
Pereira went on to say that Lofton’s hit was clearly a foul and the hit by Jenkins was not with both calls being correct by the officials, along with a nice sarcastic dig directed at Gruden to just throw the officials under the bus when he doesn’t know the rules.
He concludes with a definitive “C’mon man!” with the hopes that ESPN will have the guts to use Old Chucky in the popular segment this week because of his rules ignorance.
