NFL Pro Bowl Rosters Announced
Written by Bob Whalon, Tuesday December 27 2011
Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers might not get to face each other in the Super Bowl in Indianapolis, but they can face each other as starters in the Pro Bowl in Honolulu if they choose to do so.
Brady is one of eight New England Patriots players voted to the NFL Pro Bowl and Rodgers is one of seven Green Bay Packers to receive the honor. The San Francisco 49ers also have eight players on the roster, while the Baltimore Ravens have seven players on the roster for the Jan. 29 game.
Fourteen teams from each conference had at least one player chosen for the team. Only the St. Louis Rams and Washington Redskins in the NFC and Tennessee Titans and Buffalo Bills in the AFC were without a representative.
The NFC starters will be Rodgers, Eagles RB LeSean McCoy, Packers FB John Kuhn, Saints TE Jimmy Graham, 49ers tackle Joe Staley, Eagles tackle Jason Peters, Saints guards Jahri Evans and Cal Nicks, Panthers C Ryan Kalil, Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald and Lions WR Calvin Johnson on offense.
On defense for the NFC will be Eagles DE Jason Babin, Vikings DE Jared Allen, Cowboys DT Jay Ratliff, 49ers DT Justin Smith, Packers OLB Clay Matthews and Cowboys OLB DeMarcus Ware, 49ers ILB Patrick Willis, Packers CB Charles Woodson, 49ers CB Carlos Rodgers, Seahawks safety Earl Thomas and Cardinals safety Adrian Wilson.
The starters for the AFC squad on offense are Brady at QB, Ravens RB Ray Rice and FB Vonta Leach, Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski, Browns tackle Joe Thomas, Dolphins tackle Jake Long, Patriots guards Logan Mankins and Brian Waters, Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey, Patriots receiver Wes Welker and Steelers receiver Mike Wallace.
On defense for the AFC it will be Broncos DE Elvis Dumervil, replacing Patriots DE Andre Carter who is on the injured reserve, Colts DE Dwight Freeney, Patriots DT Vince Wolfork, Ravens DT Haloti Ngata, Ravens OLBs Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs, Jets CB Darrelle Revis, Broncos CB Champ Bailey, Steelers safety Troy Polamalu and Ravens safety Ed Reed.
All the kickers on the squad are from Bay area teams. The NFC has record-setting kicker David Akers and punter Andy Lee from the 49ers and the AFC has kicker Sabastian Janikowski and punter Shane Lechler from the Raiders.
There were fifteen first-time players chosen for the NFC and thirteen first-time players chosen for the AFC squad. Three rookies were chosen. Denver LB Von Miller, Cincinnati receiver A.J. Green and Arizona CB Patrick Peterson, who was selected as a special teams player. Peterson has tied an NFL record with four return TDs this season.
There are also a few big names that were left off the list. Detroit Lions DT Ndamukong Suh and Steelers LB James Harrison may have had too much negative publicity to get the necessary votes. Record-setting rookie QB Cam Newton of Carolina also didn't receive the honor.
Although it is not exactly a surprise, the hottest name in the NFL this season also won't be going to the Pro Bowl. Well, since many quarterbacks usual decline to play in the game, maybe Tim Tebow will get to play after all. I bet ESPN would have lots of hula dancers "Tebowing" during the broadcast if he makes the team.
And as always, players who make the Super Bowl will be replaced on the Pro Bowl rosters.
