Drew Brees Sets Passing Record
Written by Nolan Thomas, Tuesday December 27 2011
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees set the NFL passing record on Monday night, breaking the single season passing record held by Dan Marino for the past 27 years.
The Saints demolished the Atlanta Falcons 45-16 to also clinch the NFC South title.
Brees threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns in the game with the last touchdown, a 9-yard pass to Darren Sproles, which set the record with 2:51 to go in the game.
That final pass of the game gave Brees 5,087 yards passing, three yards more then Marino’s 5,084 yards with the Miami Dolphins in 1984. Brees still has another game as well to tack on even more yardage to the record.
“Great job by such a special player,” Marino Tweeted just minutes after Brees broke the record.
Brees is the first quarterback in NFL history to have two seasons with over 5000 yards passing as he also did it in 2008 with 5,069 yards.
