2011: The Year Of The....
Written by Christopher Corazon, Tuesday December 27 2011
It's the end of the year. A chance for everyone to say why they think the year will be remembered. What made this year different than the others?
Will it be the year of the Packers? Green Bay started the year with a Super Bowl win, and then went deep into the regular season with a chance at an undefeated season. It ended with a loss to Kansas City, but still was a good year.
Or will it be the year of the collapse? The Red Sox were preseason favorites, but had trouble getting out of the gate, made up for it with a great July, only to have a monumental fail in September. In basketball, the Heat were the hate target of many, and they were unable to match preseason expectations.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks won their first title. The Bruins won for the first time in nearly 40 years. The Cardinals won their 11th. Do these championships make the year memorable? Or could it be the year of a positive story like Tim Tebow? Or negative controversy like Penn State.
In my opinion, 2011 was different because it was the year of the lockout. The NFL did not have an offseason. The NBA followed suit, and lost part of the regular season. MLB, amazingly, was able to avoid any drama. But the lockouts of 2011 will have an impact on the other leagues into the next year, and longterm lessons on what to avoid in labor management.
