Brewers Sign Ex-Cub 3B Ramirez
Written by Nolan Thomas, Tuesday December 13 2011
With the Milwaukee Brewers facing the possibility of losing two of their biggest hitters in Prince Fielder to free agency and Ryan Braun to a 50-game suspension due to a positive drug test, they quickly signed former Chicago Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez to a 3-year $36 million deal on Monday.
Ramirez declined a $16 million mutual option to remain with the Cubs because he wanted a multi-year deal and the Brewers were his first choice. The Cubs will get a supplemental draft pick for the signing.
Now the only question is if Ramirez will actually help or hinder the Brewers this season and beyond. While he has good power numbers, he has a tendency to start out the season slowly, can be a defensive liability at third base and at times lacks the hustle running the bases that is needed to be a consistent winner.
It will be interesting to see if the aging Ramirez, who is 33 and could not stay healthy the last two seasons, will be able to pick up the Brewers offensively for the loss of Fielder and Braun.
