Bills RB Fred Jackson Done for Season
Written by Bob Whalon, Wednesday November 23 2011
The Buffalo Bills placed running back Fred Jackson on injured reserve on Wednesday due to a broken bone in his lower right leg.
"That's disappointing news for our team and certainly for Fred," Bills coach Chan Gailey said in a statement released by the team on Wednesday. "He was having a great year. The process for Fred to return to the field would most likely take him through the end of the season, so we have made the difficult decision to place him on injured reserve."
Jackson was hurt during Sunday's loss to the Miami Dolphins. Now the Bills (5-5) will try to end their 11-year playoff drought without their best player. That won't be easy though.
Jackson was leading the NFL in rushing entering the Dolphins game and his 1,376 yards from scrimmage through 10 games ranked second, behind only Chicago's Matt Forte (1,391). "He's Mr. Everything," Bills receiver David Nelson said.
The truth of the matter is that even with Jackson, the Bills have been struggling lately. After a 4-1 start, they have lost their last three games by a combined score of 106-26.
Former ninth overall pick, C.J. Spiller will step into the starting role and try to fulfill his draft promise. The second-year back has carried the ball 21 times for 115 yards and added 15 receptions for a mere 82 yards this season.
"I'm excited, but at the same time you're sad because one of our great players on this team is out," Spiller said. "I've got to step up."
Gailey said that in spite of Jackson's absence, the Bills will not alter their offensive philosophy.
"You've got 10 other guys that have been doing things, you can't change everything they've been doing, and you don't want to," Gailey said. "You want to let C.J. go in and do what he does best and give him an opportunity to make plays. He gets his chance now. He's probably looking forward to it and so are we."
With Spiller assuming the starting role, the Bills signed running back Tashard Choice, who was released on Tuesday by the Washington Redskins after starting the season with the Dallas Cowboys.
