MVPs Announced, Should A Pitcher Win?
Written by Christopher Corazon, Wednesday November 23 2011
Major League Baseball announced the winners of the MVP. In the National League, it was Ryan Braun. In the American League, it was Justin Verlander.
Verlander had already won the Cy Young, and led the AL in Wins, ERA, and Strikeouts. He is the first pitcher to win the MVP since Dennis Eckersley in 1992, and the first starter since Roger Clemens in 1986.
It sparks the debate: should the pitcher be eligible? Especially a starter who only pitches every 5 days? However, when you look at a line up, a batter only bats once every 9 turns in the line up. A pitcher, while only playing once every five days, effects every play. And Verlander clearly contributed to the Tigers, and certainly defined value to that team. I wrote earlier in the season that Verlander deserved it then, and now he has won it.
