Lions Want Repeat of 1962 Thanksgiving Game
Written by Nolan Thomas, Tuesday November 22 2011
For the first time in many many moons, the Detroit Lions at 7-3 are actually going to be playing an annual turkey bowl game on Thanksgiving that actually means something when they play the unbeaten Green Bay Packers this Thursday and are hoping that history repeats itself.
In 1962, the Lions faced a 10-0 unbeaten Packers team coming off an NFL championship and handed them their only loss of the season in a 26-14 victory on Thanksgiving.
This year the Lions once again face a 10-0 undefeated Packers squad coming off an NFL Championship on Thanksgiving and although none of the players were around in 1962, the Lions are hoping for a little déjà vu.
The Lions practically dominated that game rolling out to a 26-0 lead while sacking QB Bart Starr eleven times, including a safety, and returning a fumble for a touchdown. The Packers scored their 14 points in the fourth quarter during garbage time to make the score somewhat respectable.
The game was part of a seven-game winning streak for the Lions, who went on to finish the season with an 11-3 record.
