Jay Cutler to have Surgery on Thumb
Written by Nolan Thomas, Monday November 21 2011
Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler fractured the thumb on his throwing hand while making a tackle after throwing an interception in the fourth quarter of the Bears 31-20 win over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. He continued to play and finished the game.
Cutler will have surgery to repair the damage and his timetable for return is unknown at this time and will be out an extended period of time, but Bears head coach Lovie Smith is confident that Cutler can return before the season ends and that he will be ready for the playoffs if they make it.
Backup quarterback Caleb Hanie will take over for the Bears during Cutler’s absence. Hanie led two scoring drives and almost pulled out the NFC Championship game last season against the eventual champion Green Bay Packers after Cutler left the game with a knee injury.
"Caleb has played a lot for us around here,” Smith said. “We feel comfortable with him being our quarterback.”
The injury is a shame because Cutler was having his best season yet with the Bears and has led the team to five straight victories.
Behind Hanie on the roster is Nathan Enderle, a rookie fifth-round draft pick from Idaho, who has not appeared in a regular season NFL game.
The Bears plan at this time is to sign a veteran quarterback to back up Hanie but the pickings are slim. One possibility is J.T. O'Sullivan, who has played for offensive coordinator Mike Martz with the Lions and 49ers.
