Clayton Kershaw Wins Cy Young
Written by Christopher Corazon, Sunday November 20 2011
Clayton Kershaw of the LA Dodgers won the NL Cy Young Award. He is the first Dodger to win since Eric Gagne in 2003, and the first starter to win since Orel Hersheiser in 1988. He is the 8th Dodger to win the award.
Kershaw beat out a pair of Phillies. Roy Halladay finished second and Cliff Lee was a distant third. Kershaw tied for the league lead in wins with 21. He led the league in ERA and strikeouts, which is the pitchers version of the triple crown. Justin Verlander, who won the AL Cy Young, led in all three categories in the AL.
Kershaw is only 23, and was in the same draft as two time Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum of the Giants. Kershaw came straight from high school, while Lincecum was a junior in college. The two pitchers faced each other four times this year, Kershaw won all four games.
