Cubs Hire Dale Sveum as Manager
Written by Nolan Thomas, Thursday November 17 2011
The Chicago Cubs announced on Thursday that Milwaukee Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum has been hired as the next manager of the team.
Sveum, 47, received a three-year contract with a club option for 2015 and will be officially introduced as the next Cubs manager on Friday at 9 a.m. at Wrigley Field.
Sveum and Texas Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux were considered the Cubs top choices but after Maddux took himself out of consideration after interviewing due to family reasons, Sveum was the obvious choice for Theo Epstein.
Sveum did well in his limited time as Milwaukee’s manager in 2008. After Ned Yost was fired after a 3-11 slide in September, Sveum took over as interim manager and led the Brewers to their first playoff appearance in 26 years, winning six of seven games down the stretch and winning the wild card berth in the final game of the regular season.
With Sveum being hired it will be interesting to see if the Cubs jump into the Prince Fielder sweepstakes considering the good relationship they have.
