Penn State Coach McQueary Claims He Told Police

The Allentown Morning Call is reporting that Penn State wide receivers coach Mike McQueary is now claiming that he talked to the police back in 2002 after he witnessed former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky sexually assaulting a young boy.

Apparently McQueary sent an email to a former classmate in which he made this previously undisclosed claim.  He said he "Did have discussions with police and with the official at the university in charge of police" (back in 2002).

McQueary also said in the email, dated Nov. 8, that he stopped the sexual assault of a 10-year-old boy by Sandusky in an athletic facility shower and didn't just leave as had been previously reported.  "I did stop it, not physically, but made sure it was stopped when I left that locker room."

McQueary has been criticized nationally because the grand jury report stated that he left immediately to call his father when he witnessed the sexual assault.  He wouldn't give a formal interview but when asked about his mental state over the last week he said: "All over the place.  Just kind of shaken."  The process has to play out," McQueary continued.  "I don't have anything else to say."

In the email McQueary wrote that he "is getting hammered for handling this the right way, or what I thought at the time was right."

"I didn't just turn and run," McQueary said in the email.  "I made sure it stopped.  I had to make quick tough decisions."

McQueary was put on administrative leave after the university said that he had received death threats.  Head coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier had previously been fired.  Athletic Director Tim Curley has taken a leave of absence and former university vice president Gary Shultz stepped down.  Curly and Shutlz have been charged with failing to report the incident to the proper authorities.

Sandusky did a telephone interview with Bob Costas on NBC's Rock Center on Monday night where he denied all of the charges against him.  Sandusky's lawyer was in the studio with Costas to answer questions as well.

McQueary reportedly has hired a lawyer and will appear on the CBS Evening News tonight to talk about the sexual-abuse investigation.
