Justin Verlander Unanimously Wins AL Cy Young
It was announced on Tuesday that Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander unanimously won the AL Cy Young after receiving all of the 28 first-place votes from members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.
The 28-year-old right hander won the Triple Crown of pitchers in leading the American League in wins with a 24-5 record, a league lowest 2.40 ERA and the most strikeouts with 250.
Verlander was a big part of the Tigers first division title since 1987 as he won 12 straight starts at one point and also pitched a no-hitter on May 7th against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The only thing still up in the air right now is if Verlander will also win the AL MVP award next Monday and be the first starting pitcher to win the award since Roger Clemens did it in 1986 while with the Boston Red Sox.
In the overall Cy Young voting, Jered Weaver of the Los Angeles Angels was second and James Shields of the Tampa Bay Rays was third.
