Texans' Matt Schaub Done For Year

A source is reporting that Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub will miss the rest of the season with a Lisfranc injury, suffered in Houston's 37-9 win over Tamp Bay on Sunday.

Schaub supposedly was injured on a quarterback sneaking out of the end zone late in the second quarter.  He stayed in the game, but only threw three more passes.

Houston head coach Gary Kubiak said the team was bringing in a specialist from Indianapolis to evaluate Schaub and then he would fly to Charlotte, N.C., later in the week for further examinations.

With Schaub out, Matt Leinart will step in as the starting quarterback for the 7-3 Texans, who have won four in a row and share the AFC's best record with Pittsburgh.  With Houston on a bye week, Leinart will have extra time to get ready for his first playing time in over a year.

"You're time's going to come, and you've got to be accountable for when that opportunity comes," Leinart said.  "They know that I work hard and I study hard and I'm prepared very well.  We're going to take this and go game-by-game and I don't think much is going to change."

Kubiak has been increasing Leinart's repetitions in practice recently and is confident in his ability to lead the Texans' offense.  "He's played in big football games in this league, he's played big football games in college," Kubiak said.  "The key is the whole team rallying around him, and playing well as a team.  Matt doesn't have to go win a game, the team has to go win a game.  We'll rally around him and get him ready to go."

The Texans have flourished in spite of a rash of injuries this season.  Besides Schaub, the Texans have been without Pro Bowl wide receiver Andre Johnson (hamstring injury) for the last six games.  They hope he can return after the bye to give Leinart a legitimate No. 1 receiver.

Running back Arian Foster missed the first three games of the season with a strained hamstring and safety Danieal Manning has missed three games after breaking his left fibula.

The most surprising thing is that the Texans have the NFL's No. 1 defense in spite of losing sacks leader Mario Williams for the season with a torn chest muscle on Oct. 9.

"Right now, we're playing very unselfish football," Kubiak said.  "Everybody's pitching in.  I don't think we really care as a group where the plays come from, or who makes the play, scores the point or gets the sack.  We just care about winning and we're playing very hard as a football team right now.  We're going to get tested even more now, so we'll have to call on everybody to do that.  We do have a lot of confidence right now in what we're doing and we just got to keep our chin up and move forward."
