Giants Nip Patriots… Deja Vu

In a game eerily similar to Super Bowl XVII, the Giants eeked one out over the Patriots again. Despite arguably his worst game of the season, Tom Brady emerged when he needed to driving down the field and converting a do or die touchdown that most thought had won the game. But once again there was just a bit too much time left on the clock, and Eli Manning made the Patriots’ league worst pass defense pay. Two unacceptably long pass plays over the middle coupled a tough pass interference call, and the Giants were down the field in no time. All Brady could do once again was watch from the sidelines.

Ultimately, it was the Patriots’ defense that lost them the game – all they needed to do was hold the Giants one final time, yet they looked horrible when they needed it most. That said this game surely falls on Mr. Brady’s shoulders as well, as it was his uncharacteristic turnovers that put the Pats’ defense out on the field for much longer than they should have been. As opposed to the concluding drive of Super Bowl XLII, give Eli Manning all the credit in the world this time around – he made the plays when he needed to and their were no desperation heaves or lucky on top of the head catches. His final TD pass was perhaps his best of the day.

While I’m disappointed to have lost, this isn’t a devastating blow for the Patriots by any means – they are still tied atop the AFC East with the Jets on tap next week. But while Giants fans should be thrilled, they should also be a bit ashamed in themselves and their lack of faith in their team. Leading up to this game, it was very obvious that some serious matchup problems would factor into this game:

1) Eli Manning has been good this year, especially in the 4th quarter, and was playing against the worst pass defense in the league.

2) The Patriots had just been beat by a team that was successful in disrupting Brady in the pocket, which is exactly the Giants’ specialty.

Despite the obvious problems these matchups would create for the Pats, I couldn’t find a Giants fan willing to take their team in this game. The most daring Giants fan proposed a bet where I was supposed to give him -3.5 points, and well as 2.5-1 odds. That’s how much confidence you have in your boys? If I was Eli, I’d be disgusted with you. Just saying. If you’ve got a team that can play, take your tail out from between your legs and back them.

All in all, big win for Giants fans. Can Eli keep it up?
