CC Sabathia Staying With the Yankees
Written by Bob Whalon, Monday October 31 2011
CC Sabathia announced on Twitter that he is staying with the New York Yankees. This news came as something of a shock, as even the Yankees were "shocked" that Sabathia chose not to opt out of his current contract.
Sabathia had until midnight on Monday to opt out of his existing contract and test free agency, but instead decided he wanted to stay in the Bronx. "My goal the whole time was to be able to finish my career as a Yankee," Sabathia said in a video posted on Twitter. "I look forward to seeing everybody out at the ballpark next year."
The total deal is now for five years and $122 million. That replaces the four years and $92 million he had remaining on his original contract. Sabathia, 31, will be paid $25 million in 2016, which is the final year of the deal. It contains a vesting option for $25 million for 2017 with a $5 million buyout based solely on the condition of his pitching shoulder. Sabathia will qualify for the vesting option as long as he spends less than 45 days on the disabled list with a shoulder injury in 2016.
In essence the Yankees added one year and $30 million to the original contract Sabathia signed with the team in 2008.
"CC is the ace of our pitching staff, a leader in our clubhouse and a driving force for the Yankees in our community," Yankees senior vice president and general manager Brian Cashman said in a statement released by the team on Monday. "He is exactly the type of player and person that Yankees fans and this organization can be proud of. We are excited that he will be wearing pinstripes for many years to come."
Sabathia went 19-8 for the Yankees in 2011 and has won 59 games for them over his three seasons in the Bronx.
Sabathia could have become the premier free agent pitcher on the market if he had chosen to opt out of his deal. The only other pitchers on the market are going to be the Texas Rangers' C.J. Wilson, the Philadelphia Phillies' Roy Oswalt, the Chicago White Sox's Mark Buehrle and Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish. Instead, Sabathia decided to stay in New York and the market will be without its biggest name.
