The St. Louis Cardinals won their 11th World Series in 2011. At one point in late August, they were 12 games behind the Atlanta Braves for the Wild Card. They made it in to the playoffs on the last day of the season and had to face the heavily favored Philadelphia Phillies. They trailed the NLDS 2-1, but won in 5 games.

The next opponent was the Milwaukee Brewers, who had won more home games than anyone in MLB. St. Louis won that series in Milwaukee, 4 games to 2. Finally came the World Series, where in game 6 the Cardinals were twice down to their final strike. They eventually won that game in 11 innnings, and won game 7 6-2.

David Freese, the hero of the 6th game, was MVP of the World Series and the NLCS. It is the 6th time that the same player won both awards. Freese is a native of St. Louis who briefly gave up baseball after high school. Now he is two time MVP for the championship of his hometown team.
