Where's Motte?
Written by Christopher Corazon, Wednesday October 26 2011
Tony La Russa has been a successful manager in MLB. He was a winner with the Chicago White Sox in the AL West long, long ago. That's right, the Sox used to be in the West. Imagine, they lost the ALCS to the Orioles. That's right again, the Orioles used to play baseball.
La Russa reinvented the way MLB looks at the bullpen with the use of Dennis Eckersley in Oakland. Remember LaRussa managing the Bash Brothers? Remember there wasn't any talk of steroids in the 80's?
La Russa has been in St. Louis a long time. And now it seems the game might have passed him by a little bit. He once managed the bullpen in new ways. On Monday, he was left wondering "Where's Motte?". He probably wanted Jason Motte to face Mike Napoli. La Russa claimed there was a problem with the phone.
The miscommunication in Game 5 might be the turning point in the World Series. Hard to believe in 2011 you would have an error due to a bullpen phone. Or maybe times have changed too much for La Russa.
