Cruz Slams Tigers Into History
Written by Christopher Corazon, Tuesday October 11 2011
The Texas Rangers took a commanding 2-0 lead in the ALCS. They also had a 2-0 lead in game three, but fell behind 3-2 after Ryan Raburn hit a 3 run shot. Nelson Cruz tied the game with a solo home run in the 8th. The Rangers loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth (when that happens kids, you should score two). But the Detroit bullpen was able to escape and send the game into extra innings.
There were opportunities for both teams in extra innings. But Cruz hit a historical grand slam in the bottom of the 11th. It is the first time in MLB that a playoff game ended with a grand slam. Robin Ventura hit a slam for the Mets in 1999, but he was mobbed rounding first and was only credited with a single.
For Cruz, he had five RBIs for the day in leading his team to a 7-3 win. The Tigers return to Detroit today and must win game three. Meanwhile, in the NLCS, Albert Pujols also had five RBIS to help the Cardinals even their series with the Brewers.
