David Garrard: I want to play this season
Though he’s been out of work since the Jaguars inexplicably waived him before the season began, quarterback David Garrard still feels like he can contribute to an NFL team this year.
Per ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, Garrard took time out on Saturday to reinforce a few points, the most important being he’s a football player first and foremost, and would like the opportunity to prove that to a “committed” organization.
“There’s been a lot of speculation about me that I don’t appreciate,” said Garrard on Saturday. “I was going to lay low with the media but I feel I have to protect my name. I just want to make it clear that I’m a football player, I want to be with a team and be with an organization that will be as committed to me as I will be to them.”
The speculation he’s referring to centers around the Dolphins, who courted him shortly after he was let loose by Jacksonville on September 6, and again this week, when the ‘Fins lost starter Chad Henne for the season to a shoulder injury.
Rumors began swirling that Miami couldn’t land Garrard either time because they wouldn’t up their guaranteed offer to meet his demand, a notion that was confirmed straight from the horse’s mouth.
“They were not willing to guarantee me the kind of money that reflects a real commitment and what I believe would protect me from being cut twice in one season,” Garrard said. “That doesn’t mean I’m one of those players who thinks I’m worthy of another big pay day. My thoughts are the money I did want guaranteed the rest of the year was miniscule with respect to what I accomplished over my career. It wasn’t outrageous.”
The Dolphins went on to sign Sage Rosenfels as veteran insurance to new starter Matt Moore.
Although he thinks missing out on Miami just wasn’t the “right opportunity” for him and his family, Garrard insists he’s still keeping his body, arms, and legs in playing shape and is “ready to play” — just in case the right opportunity actually arises.
At this point, though, he may need to come to the realization that other teams don’t view him as anything more than a backup at this point in his career, evidenced by how quickly the Jags cut him in favor of journeyman Luke McCown. It would probably be wise of Garrard to temper his expectations a bit if he’s looking to gain employment over the next few months.
