MLB Playoffs Continue Even Trend
Written by Christopher Corazon, Saturday October 08 2011
There are some people who complain about baseball that the same teams always win. They say it is always the Red Sox and Yankees, and recently the Phillies, that win because their payrolls make the sport uneven. The actual results show MLB has parity that does not exist in the other sports.
In the past 10 years, nine different teams have won the World Series. Five other teams have made it to the World Series, meaning that 14 of the 30 franchises have played for the championship. If the Brewers win the NLCS, that means that number will increase to 15, making the total equal to half of the teams in MLB. If either the Tigers or Brewers win the World Series, there will be 10 different champions in the past 11 years.
In addition, the playoffs have been very competitive. The Rangers eliminated the Rays in four games, while all three other series went five games. Each game was decided by one run. The Brewers and Cardinals will meet as they did in the 1982 World Series, only this time it is in the NLCS. The Rangers are in the ALCS for the second year in a row, and this time they take on the Tigers.
The teams from the east coast are gone and so are the biggest markets. Ratings will probably be down this year. That's too bad, because if people were watching, they would be saying close games that prove that the highest payrolls do not win all the time and different teams compete for the championship in MLB.
