NY Rangers Agitator Avery sent to Connecticut Whale
Written by Heidi Pope Werner, Wednesday October 05 2011
The outspoken, rowdy winger has energized the New York Rangers for years, but now he's looking for a new home. Avery was placed on waivers Tuesday by the Rangers, but has not been claimed by another NHL team. Avery was sent to the New York Rangers club affiliate in Hartford, the Connecticut Whale.
Rangers coach John Tortorella said the club had better players than Avery, and has been critical of his play and antics on the ice and off. "I'm trying to do this the right way, because I do not wanna keep on shoveling dirt over Sean Avery, but we have better players than Sean Avery, right now on the hockey club," Tortorella said.
Avery was in his final season of the contract he originally signed with the Dallas Stars. Cutting Avery from the roster also clears his $1.93 million earnings from the team's salary cap making room for other key players. If the Rangers decide to recall Avery from the minors and another team claims him on the way back up, the third team splits the cost with the Rangers leaving Dallas off the hook.
Avery is infamous for his "sloppy seconds" reference to his then girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert. He later apologized for the comment. Recently, at his Hollywood home, Avery fought with police over noise. He was arrested for shoving a police officer, calling cops "fat little pigs." The charges were dropped.
Despite the unfavorable antics, Avery gave his support to the New Yorkers for Marriage Equality campaign with a 30-second video. He is said to be the first New York athlete to vocally support same-sex marriage.
Avery has played for the Detroit Red Wings, the Los Angeles Kings, the Dallas Stars, and the New York Rangers. Avery has accrued 244 points and 1512 penalty minutes in his 565 NHL career games.
