Giants Employee Arrested for Stealing Players Payroll
Written by Nolan Thomas, Wednesday August 31 2011
Robin O’Conner, a former payroll department manager for the San Francisco Giants almost got away with embezzling $1.5 million from team players between June 2010 and June 2011.
With the amount of players’ checks, mostly direct deposited, a few thousand dollars a week is not even noticed. Do this to numerous players and the money starts rolling in.
O’Conner, who earned $80,000 a year with the Giants, would have probably got away with it too if greed and stupidity did not take over.
She applied for a loan with Bank of America to buy a house in San Diego and used a letter supposedly from the Giants HR manager that she actually forged, stating that the large deposits into her bank account were bonuses because of her outstanding contributions in helping the Giants win the World Series last season.
When Bank of America sent a copy of the letter to the Giants for confirmation, the gig was up. Now she will have a new home behind bars.
