Kyle Orton Named Broncos Starting QB
Written by Bob Whalon, Monday August 22 2011
Tim Tebow has a competition on his hands for the quarterback job with the Denver Broncos. Unfortunately for Tebow, that competition is with Brady Quinn for the backup quarterback job.
Denver coach John Fox officially named Kyle Orton as his starting quarterback on Monday. Fox also said that Tebow and Quinn will battle in the last two preseason games to win the job as Orton's primary backup.
"Well, we've talked to the quarterbacks, Kyle in particular," Fox said after practice on Monday. "We're going to name him the starter for the opener against the Raiders. We've not really reached a conclusion on 2 or 3 yet, and won't, probably, until after the preseason games."
It has been a strange offseason for Orton and the Broncos. The team hired Fox to coach the team and immediately put Orton on the trade block. When they didn't receive any offers for the signal-caller, they opened up the competition for the starting quarterback job.
Orton easily won the competition against his two younger teammates. "He's played extremely well. He has great command of the offense, I think he has the most experience in this offense, and I think that's been evident," Fox said.
Tebow started the final three games last season and there was a feeling that he would be the starter this season. Ultimately, when the team couldn't trade Orton and Tebow struggled with his mechanics and accuracy the decision was made.
Now Tebow will have to show that he's at least better than Quinn or he may find himself as the No. 3 quarterback heading into the regular season. In that competition, Tebow seems to have an unlikely tutor; Orton.
Orton was seen tutoring Tebow on his mechanics and throwing motion during practice on Monday. Apparently Orton is taking his job as the leader of the team seriously. Hopefully Tebow learns more than just passing mechanics from his tutor.
