Every major sports champion in America gets a chance to visit the White House and meet the President and Monday the reigning World Series Champion San Francisco Giants got their chance.

The Giants received praise from President Barack Obama and gave him a jersey with No. 44, a bat signed by the team and a silver and black glove, a nod to Obama's hometown Chicago White Sox.

Also in attendance was former Giant Willie Mays, who was on the last Giants team to win a World Series, 56 years ago.

The President commended club president Larry Baer "for building such an extraordinary franchise", even though manager Bruce Bochy once called his own team "a bunch of misfits and castoffs."

Obama singled out several players including pitcher Tim Lincecum.  "Before Game 5 last year, Tim was so relaxed he was singing in the clubhouse.  That's how his teammates knew they were about to see something special.  And after watching him pitch eight incredible innings, including a stretch of 11 strikes in a row, America learned sometimes it's a good idea to bet on the skinny guy.  So, you and me," he said referring to his own slight build.

He credited the team and players for their many charitable contributions, including being the first team to join the 'It Gets Better' campaign against bullying.

"So that's what this team is all about: characters with character, Obama said referring to what general manager once said about his players.  "And so once again I want o congratulate this team and wish them all the best of luck in the rest of the season......unless the White Sox are in the world Series."
