MLB Hall Of Fame Welcomes New Members
Written by Christopher Corazon, Sunday July 24 2011
The MLB Hall Of Fame welcomed three new members today. Roberto Alomar, Bert Blyleven, and Pat Gillick were inducted in Cooperstown, NY.
Alomar was a member of the Blue Jays when they won the World Series in 1992 and 93. Gillick was the GM for those teams. Alomar is considered one of the best second basemen of all time. Later in his career he went to Baltimore while Gillick was there, and still later was in Cleveland with his brother, Sandy Alomar Jr. The Blue Jays will retire Alomar's number later this month, he is the first player to wear their cap.
Blyleven waited several years to receive the call. As a matter of fact, he had a narrow miss last season with Alomar, the only time two players missed by such a narrow margin. Blyleven finished fifth on the strike out list, and had 287 career wins. He will wear a Twins cap, and they retired his number on Saturday. He also played for the Pirates that were famous for the slogan "We are family".
Gillick made it as a GM. During his career, he sometimes earned the name "Stand Pat" by his tendency to not make deadline deals. But he won the World Series in Toronto two times and again in Philadelphia in 2008.
