When Robert Duvall attempted to carve out a piece of Vietnamese beach in Apocalypse Now so he and his troops could surf he may have been onto something. In both England and the U.S. studies have been conducted that provide proof that surfing assists combat veterans in overcoming Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Along with Doctors and therapists the Marines are on board having set up surfing classes for PTSD suffering patients and they acknowledge that the feeling of working with the ocean while riding her waves has removed much of the tension the Marines suffered while relieving their insomnia and alleviating their depression.

England has also seen success with vets surfing and the National Health Service is recommending it as a form of therapy. When critics attacked the idea of the NHS supporting “water sports” the NHS responded by showing that teaching a vet to surf and outfitting them with a board costs about $400., far less than the cost of anti-depressant medication.
