Is Matt Hasselbeck Headed Out of Seattle?
Written by Travis Pulver, Monday July 18 2011
With the lockout expected to end sometime this week and the free agency period to start shortly after, teams will be scrambling to sign their players and possibly steal someone else’s. Since the teams have not been able to teach their rookies the playbook during mini-camps and OTAs this year, veteran help is likely to be highly sought after.
One such guy that could be targeted by a number of teams is Seattle Seahawk QB Matt Hasselbeck.
Hasselbeck and the Seahawks were trying to negotiate a new deal prior to the lockout, but were unable to get it done. When free agency does start, teams are going to have an exclusive three day window to sign their free agents, and then it will be open season.
A player like Hassellbeck that has been to a Super Bowl will be appealing to a number of teams that have young, inexperienced quarterbacks and rookies on their roster and no one else. Matt’s brother, Tim, thinks that a team like the Tennessee Titans (who have Rusty Smith and Jake Locker).
“It’s kind of been assumed that my brother Matthew Hasselbeck would be back in Seattle,” Tim Hasselbeck said on NFL LiveMonday. “It is a very real possibility and it would be a bold move to see him as a Tennessee Titan. They obviously don’t want to start a rookie quarterback . . . it is a logical fit for him and I think it would surprise a lot of people.”
If it ends up being true, Seahawks fans might want to brace themselves for a long season.
