Braves Win 10,000th
Written by Christopher Corazon, Sunday July 17 2011
The Nationals made five errors on Friday and lost 11-1 in Atlanta. While it was just another loss for Washington, it was the 10,000th win for the Braves. On Saturday, they celebrated with several markings on the field and a flag that said 10,000.
The Braves started as the Boston Red Stockings in 1876. Along with the Cubs, they are one of two clubs that have stayed in the NL continuously. While in Boston, they were also known as the Beaneaters, the Doves, the Pilgrims, and the Bees. In 1914, the Miracle Braves won the World Series, their only championship in Boston.
The 1948 Braves won the NL and there was almost a subway series in Boston. Boston has the oldest subway in the US, but you actually would take the streetcar from Fenway to Old Braves Field. And it might be faster to walk. but the reason there was no subway series was that the Red Sox lost to the Indians in a playoff, and Cleveland won the World Series, and they have not won since.
The Braves in those days were known for two pitching stars, Warren Spahn and Johnny Sain. It led to the saying "Spahn and Sain and pray for rain." In 1953 the Braves moved to Milwaukee. They won the World Series in 1957 and saw the early stages of one of the greatest home run hitters of all time, Henry Aaron.
In 1966, the Braves moved to Atlanta. Henry Aaron broke Babe Ruth's record for career home runs. Bobby Cox led the team through the 90s and early part of the 2000s while the team dominated the NL East. They had pitching stars like Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, and John Smoltz. Despite their regular season dominance, they only won the World Series in 1995.
Thraves have a rich history. They have played in three different towns, and won a World Series in each about forty years apart. And now they have 10,000 wins.
