NFL Shoots for July 17 Deal
Written by Nolan Thomas, Tuesday July 12 2011
With the NFL training camps scheduled start dates just around the corner, July 17 has been the most recent targeted date set to reach a deal on a new collective bargaining agreement between the owners and the players.
A month ago we heard that the date was July 4, but since that date has now come and gone with no deal in place, the 17th is now the new projected date.
The media has been reporting that the negotiations have been moving in the right direction, yet some of the NFLPA player representatives have publically said that is not the case and that the two sides are still a long way apart.
We would all love to hear the news that a new labor agreement has been reached and that training camps will start on time and all of the games, including preseason games would be played and that the NFL season would happen as scheduled.
That is highly unlikely at this point however. Call me a pessimist if you must, but I have heard enough BS from both sides to not believe anything form anyone concerning the possibility of reaching a new agreement on time.
Even if an agreement was reached by the 17th, it looks as if the Hall of Fame game between the Chicago Bears and the St. Louis Rams on August 7 in Canton is not going to happen.
These two teams are schedule to start training camp on July 22, and even with an agreement by the 17th, it would leave only five days to sign players, including veteran free agents, draft picks and undrafted rookies.
General Managers were hoping that they could begin that process by this Friday, giving the Rams and the Bears a full week before the start of training camp in order to sign free agents and rookies and give all of the other teams in the league at least two weeks.
